Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease—also known as periodontal disease—can be devastating to your oral health.

Gum disease describes an infection of the tissues that surround your teeth. Bacteria on the teeth build up and harden into plaque. When plaque is not removed, it forms tartar that cannot be removed through brushing or flossing. Only professional cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist can remove tartar.

Build-up of plaque and tartar cause the symptoms of gum disease, which include

  • Red, swollen gums
  • Tender gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss
  • Painful, sensitive teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Receeding gums that pull away and make teeth appear longer
  • Persistent bad breath

If left untreated, gum disease can cause gum tissue to recede and can result in bone loss and tooth loss.

Treatment for gum disease is based on each person's specific needs. Treatment may include improved oral hygiene at home, additional dental cleanings, scaling and root planing (deep cleanings), antibiotic treatment, and gum surgery.

Regular cleanings and exams at J. de Graffenried Dentistry along with good oral hygiene procedures at home will help you reduce your risk of gum disease.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of gum disease, do not allow the disease to progress. Call our office today at 903-218-4044 and book an appointment.
